Mango genetic diversity is particularly important for livelihoods in rural areas of Malihabad and with it the traditional knowledge on its background, growing conditions, uses and traditions. However, in whole sale markets, very low sale price offered to non commercial community varieties constitutes a threat to diversity in Malihabad, a major centre of mango genetic diversity of the world. Farmers get higher price for their rare varieties if sold in markets of posh colonies. If they by pass the mediators/traders of whole sale markets and sell only rare varieties in city are relished by urban masses who don’t have access to these traditional varieties. For creating awareness and making consumers awareness, need of cataloguing these varieties was felt by the farmers so that potential purchasers are identified in advance before on set of harvest season and thus market links could be developed. Importance of farmers catalogue in diversity ownership and empowering community was realized by them. It gives due recognition to the participating farmers, presenting them with names and photos.
With participatory approach, farmer’s catalogue descriptor was developed and community members were trained for documentation of the genetic diversity available in the communities. Training on documentation of the diversity to the farmers was given by the scientists of CISH using farmer’s descriptor. In Malihabad, SCMD has led the way in documenting and facilitating the sharing of the mango varieties grown and developed within the community and the associated knowledge. Community knowledge concerns not only older varieties and practices, but also the innovations they carry out in their daily cultural activities in selecting the best material for further propagation and improving varieties. On the other hand, cataloguing genetic diversity can serve as a means of strengthening the living traditional knowledge and this is possible only in close collaboration with farmers, to document their varieties and related knowledge. The UNEP-GEF project has initiated activities for publishing an impressive catalogue as an activity of the project.
