Conservation of Varieties

  1. Assess genetic diversity of mango seedling populations and traditional varieties within each community and prepare farmers catalogue for creating awareness.
  2. Organize Mango diversity Fair for awareness and documentation of mango varieties.
  3. Organize participatory workshops with key stakeholders and farmers and other users in the community for implementation of good practices.
  4. Identify and propagate elite materials for table and pickling purposes of mango seedlings.
  5. Develop community nursery and link up communities with existing nurseries.
  6. Make efforts to register farmers’ variety and multiply for further scaling up through local nursery networks.

Community Mango Catalogue
            A Farmer’s catalogue of mangoes of the communities is being developed by the farmers for better marketing of unique mangoes of Malihabad. Members of SCMD were trained at CISH for documentation of the genetic diversity available in the communities. The communities are preparing catalogue of important varieties having unique flavour and taste which can fetch attractive prices in urban markets.

Diversity Fair

  1. Mango diversity fair was organized on June 18, 2011 at Kasmandikalan where 92 orchards of communities exhibited their fruit diversities.
  2. Diversity fair at Dheradun was organized on May 28, 2011 where 50 farmers varieties were exhibited.
  3. In All India Mango Show during Global Conference on Augmenting Production and Utilization of Mango in Emerging Scenario of Biotic and Abiotic Stresses, 250 varieties were displayed and farmers of SCMD bagged first prize for displaying maximum number of varieties, 2 first and 2 second prizes for best mango exhibits.
  4. First prize was awarded to the SCMD for display of maximum number of varieties in “Global Conference on Horticulture for food, nutrition and livelihood options” at OUAT, Bhubneshwer during May 28 to 31, 2012 where 50 farmers’ varieties were exhibited.
  5. In a mango exhibition on July 2, 2012 at Kasmandikalan 425 varieties were displayed.

Training
  2011

  1. Training on use of motorized saw was conducted at Horticulture Experiment and Training Center, Malihabad during Feb. 2011 where Site Officer and Community organizers were trained. Precautions and upkeep of the motorized saw was demonstrated to them.
  2. Site Officer and Community organizers were trained for recording of information for developing farmers diversity catalogue, CISH, Rehmankhera, 25.5.2011. Training on farmers’ catalogue was again imparted to Site Officer and Community organizers at CISH, Rehmankhera, 3.6.2011 for clearing their doubts about recording the information.
  3. Ten community members participated in Diversity Show organized by Lt. Amit Singh memorial foundation and displayed 25 varieties at ‘Swadesh Prem Jagriti Sangosthi’-2011. They also participated in National conference on Horti Business- Linking farmers with market during May 28- 30, 2011, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
  4. Potential entrepreneurs among the farmers were also chosen for one day training on Panna making and demonstration on use of Ethrel for the ripening of mango on 10-06-2011 at CISH, Rehmankhera, Lucknow. Twelve female community members participated in the training.
