Malihabad in well known for its quality fruits and unique mango varieties. Several hundreds of mango varieties in Malihabad existed as a result of selection from seedling mango plantings. Famous varieties like Dashehari, Chausa, Malihabad Safeda (Johari), Prince, Gilas, Lucknow Safeda and several other varieties came into existence as a result of selections in this area.  Varieties like Gilas, Alif Laila, Abdul Khalid Khan, Acharwala, Amin Khurd, Fakira, Gola, Gola Bhadaiya, Gullu, Hathizhool, Heere Hayat, Intaquab, Jafarbagh, Kalua, Khasul Khas, Muntkhab, Nawab Pasand, Nayab, Ramkela, Benajir Sandila, Taimuria are some of the varieties known locally evolved through seedling selection process. Farmers are the curators of mango varieties in Malihabad for long time over several generations. All the varieties evolved in Malihabad are the result of selections from seedlings and originated as a result of open pollination. Number of seedling varieties and farmers’ varieties are decreasing because new orchards are now planted with grafted plants for commercial purpose. Thus, urgent need to conserve such mango varieties at farmer level was felt by the community members but very low sale price of non-commercial varieties in the fruit mandi was major constraint in the sustainability of this effort. Community efforts for successful and profitable production, linking suitable markets with producers and value addition of non commercial mango varieties gave birth to community based organization, The Society for Conservation of Mango Diversity (SCMD).
SCMD is a non-profit, non-governmental community based organization (CBO) playing an important role in on-farm conservation of farmers mango varieties in Malihabad area. It is an outcome of UNEP/GEF project: ‘Conservation and Sustainable Use of Cultivated and Wild Tropical Fruit Diversity: Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods, Food Security and Ecosystem Services’. Absence of effective CBO in and around Malihabad, which can promote the preservance of farmers’ mango varieties was long felt need and with the initiatives of CISH, Lucknow and local farmer growers SCMD was established in 2009 and registered in 2011. Community members of Gopramau, Sarsanda, Mahmood Nagar Talukedari and Kasmandi Kalan volunteered for developing CBO for managing farmers’ varieties. At present more than 600 mango farmers are associated with the CBO. As per estimates there are more than 3000 unique mango varieties available with these communities.

Objectives of the Society

  1. To demonstrate successful and profitable production of farmers’ mango varieties, linking suitable markets with producers and value addition.
  2. To conserve mango varieties on-farm through strengthened capacity of community farmers, to sustainably apply good practices and secure benefits.
  3. To improve livelihoods through the conservation and use of traditional and non-commercial mango varieties.
